In October of 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019 and February of 2014 and 2018 I visited Iceland for the purposes of photography.
The first trip was a package tour, badly planned, and saw me driving around rather aimlessley looking for photo locations. On my second and third visits I had a fairly well researched list of places I wanted to photograph. Over my 8 trips I've stayed in Vik, Akureyri, Hofn, Keflavik, Myvatn, Grundafjordur and the Bates Motel in Borgarnes. The weather varied from bitingly cold (-14) to shirtsleeve mild and from dry & sunny to sodden & miserable. In 2011 and 2012 I didn't see much rain much but 2013 more than compensated for that with 5 solid days of grey drizzle. February 2018 was COLD! October daylight is from about 7am to 7pm and February about 10.15am to 5.15pm and those times determined my daily schedule. I was up and out early and usually in bed by 9pm. I drove for miles and miles as Iceland is considerably bigger than it looks at 40,000 square miles (or five times the size of Wales). The 90kph (55mph) speed limited is a bit limiting but, as there are speed cameras and draconian fines, you ignore it at your financial peril and, contrary to popular rumours, I have never been fined for speeding on any trip. Why would anyone hurry through such an amazing landscape? Iceland is the most interesting and spectacular country I've ever visited. I hope to return again and again.... |
